How To Make An F-Bomb Out Of Aluminum! This Is One Cool Project You Should Check Out.

I’m not saying everyone wants to make a miniature bomb, but the steps required to make this thing sure could come in handy when building something else in the shop. And the lesson is coming from the master of metal manipulation, Ron Covell. I mean this dude knows what he’s talking about, has been teaching others how to do it for decades, and is about as humble as they come when talking about his skill. And he’s partnering with 6061.com on this one so you know the end result is going to be fun as hell! I can tell you that if you are not familiar with building bucks or forming metal, then these two videos will be life changing for you. Seeing just how easy it is to manipulate aluminum sheet into the shape  that you want will be an eye opener for sure. I’m not saying that you’ll be a master in a day, but with these two videos and trying out this project, you will be changing how you view sheet metal projects for sure.

And they don’t require special tools! In the second video Ron goes over shaping three identical pieces of aluminum and does each one using a different method. The first is literally just using a hammer on a metal workbench. That’s it! Then there is a planishing hammer and then an english wheel. Guess what? Each one does the job perfectly fine, with just a slight difference in finish work required. I’m telling you, this is a video series to watch. Here are the first two in the series, we’ll bring you the rest as soon as they are out!

Valvetrain Tech: If Light Weight And Low Reciprocating Mass Matter So Much, Do Stiffer Valve Springs Cost Horsepower?

Roller rockers, roller lifters, beehive valve springs, lightweight valves, lightweight locks and retainers, and the list goes on. These are all things designed to aid in controlling valvetrain at high rpm and under extreme power levels, and they do this by reducing the load required to move and control these components. So it would make sense that lighter valve springs would also be good for that. After all, anyone that has built an engine before knows that spinning the engine over by hand is very easy when it is just a short block and gets harder as you add components. If you have an engine with no spark plugs in it, and no rocker arms, then it is still really easy to spin by hand. But when you also have to turn the valvetrain, it becomes much more difficult.

So if you had an engine that didn’t “require” heavier valve springs, because it wasn’t going to be run at high rpm or didn’t have a camshaft that needed the extra valve control that heavy springs provide, would it make more horsepower with lighter weight springs that the others? Logic says yes. Or at least it seems like it does. But what does the dyno say?

Luckily for us, Richard Holdener knows because he’s done this very test and here it is so you can see for yourself.

Car Hauler Rebuild And Remodel: Windows, Kitchen Design, And More! This Thing Is Going To Be Rad!

Everyone wants one of those big giant toterhomes with the huge stacker trailer and all the fancy stuff that goes along with it, but most of us have zero shot of actually being able to afford something like that. I know I’ve considered buying an older gooseneck car hauler with the intention of building a nice and efficient living space in it that would still allow me to haul a car or two to the races. Well Emily and Aaron are doing just that and if you have missed any of the previous episodes, just click the link below and you can watch from the beginning.

In this episode new parts are actually starting to go into the trailer including big new windows that will make the bedroom area super nice. There will be no doubts that everyone will be jealous of their cool digs at the races. In addition to the windows, there are also new parts coming in and the kitchen planning is turning into kitchen construction. This isn’t an ultra fancy build, but it will definitely be cool, comfy, and useful. They are putting lots of thought into how each element will be used and that’s cool to see.

When Last Minute Testing Your Burnout Truck For Cleetus And Cars, Sometimes Your Driveway Becomes The Burnout Pad

Yep, James is no poser, that’s for sure. When under a time crunch to get their LS Swapped S10 Burnout truck, aka Burnie, ready for Cleetus and Cars Burnout Rivals in Indy, sometimes you have to piss off the neighbors. After stealing the trans out of his race car, and going through brake issues and a couple other snags, Burnie was back up and running with just hours to go before leaving for Indy. Of course there were a couple other snags and just an hour before it had to be on the trailer there was testing that needed going. After all, you got to know if there are vibrations, if the new torque converter is okay, and whether the brakes will hold for big time tire frying excitement or not.

Testing was in order and with no time to go anywhere else, the driveway became the burnout pad whether the neighbors liked it or not. Now I happen to know James’ neighborhood. I went there to pick up some tires he hooked me up with for the drive days on Rocky Mountain Race Week in 2019. It’s your average Colorado high desert neighborhood with family homes all around. This is not the country, and it is not remote. It is very close to town.

But the testing had to happen and the results were no vibrations, a tune that needs some tweaks, and brakes that need more bleeding to hold. But most importantly the smoke happened. And lots of it. Watch.

Holley’s New High-Clearance, High-Flow, Lo-Ram Intake Is Available For LS3. Burst Panel Optional!

Holley’s new Lo-Ram intake manifolds are designed for those that don’t want a scoop or bubble, or who don’t want to cut a hole in their hood, but who want big power capability. Or, for those that want an intake manifold mounted intercooler, dual injectors, and a burst panel. They are available in a couple of different configurations so you can decide just how low your profile needs to be in order to fit in your vehicle. Just think of them as low, and super low, although Holley refers to them as top feed and front feed.

The top feed unit has the throttle body mounted to the top half of the intake, out front, just like their mid-ram and high-ram intakes. The front feed unit has a throttle body mounting location that is lower, and mounts to both the upper and lower half of the intake. Another great feature of the front feed is the option for dual injectors and rails for those guys making big power on E85 or Methanol. There is also an option upper plenum that is available with an SFI burst panel mounting location!

This stuff really is made for big power. Watch the video to learn even more.

Awesomely Weird: This 1970s Chevrolet Parts Film Stars Evel Knievel And Literally Makes No Sense

We’re guessing someone lost their job for this one. You are going to watch this 1970s Chevrolet parts film which stars Evel Knivel and makes literally no sense at all. The theme of the film is “conflict” and it is illustrated by a series of scenes where animals eat other animals, black and white movies are shown, and Evel Knievel jumps stuff on his motorcycle, sometimes crashing, sometimes not. Throw in a dose of 1970s Anchoman-level hilarity with a bikini-clad woman, and you have yourself one of the most singular odd things we have ever seen.

Make no mistake, Knievel would never turn down a gig, especially one with Chevrolet that likely was a great payday for reading some cue-cards. The company definitely did not hire him for his suave acting ability because this dude is straight up stiff while narrating the action. By action, we mean the bizarre things we are shown on screen.

Oddly, while Chevrolet parts are mentioned a handful of times there’s barely (if ever) a Chevrolet car shown as a prop in the film. This whole thing is some weirdo theater of the mind that was likely schemed up by an executive’s kid. “Hey Johnson, get my son a job in the media department and let him run wild!”

Obviously, Knievel was majorly famous at this point and his star only grew bigger. Note that he mentions that someday, “I’ll jump a mile….” we all know how that quest ended.

You have to see this one to believe it.

Press play to see the weirdest Chevrolet Parts video ever made, starring Evel Knievel!

Classic YouTube: 1970 AMC Gremlin Commercial – I’ll Take “This Never Happened” For $1,000, Alex!

Derided or admired, the American Motors Gremlin was just one of many clever moves made in the 1970s by AMC’s soul, designer Dick Teague. The man hampered with a shoestring budget could throw out some of the most clever concepts possible, and the Gremlin was one of them. Inspired by the 1968 AMC AMX-GT show car (think a Gremlin, but based off of the 1968 AMX), the Gremlin was sketched out on a Northwest Orient Airlines barf bag, was released on April 1st, 1970, and was named after what pilots believed was causing malfunctions in their planes. At least the car itself was solid: take the newly-minted Hornet, lop off the ass-end, and turn it into a truncated station wagon that didn’t look like anything else on the roads. The bones of the car were good, the six-cylinder was an anvil (and with the 304, a screamer) and the size was exactly what was being demanded from consumers at the time, something close to the nearly omnipresent VW Beetle. And it was cheap. They were a score and a half for a company that badly needed one. Teague himself knew the looks would be controversial, but the name left more people askew than the looks did. Made through 1978 before morphing into the Spirit, the Gremlin is now a fully established form of 1970s kink, a funky little car from a funky time few remember without a bit of haze.

Now, haze or not, the marketing team behind this commercial certainly were not seeing things correctly. The Germans had the Beetle, which had been the standard for small cars when the Gremlin came out. Small, compact, frugal and capable, the Beetle needs no introduction or explanation regarding it’s popularity. All you have to do is mention the complete production timeline: 1938-2003. British automotive manufacturing had found their “Titanic, meet iceberg” moment in 1968 when British Leyland was formed. By the time the Gremlin rolled out, British Leyland was quickly falling into turmoil, with brands within the conglomerate competing with each other in markets. If anything, the Japanese had a better reason to be there. After years of slow encroachment and product testing that had left consumers cracking jokes, the Japanese had gotten serious about improvements and by the early 1970s were making solid inroads into the market.

Then, there’s the wedge of cheese from Kenosha.

Candy Paint Job Tech: Here’s How To Do Amazing Candy Panel Paint. The Serape Mexican Blanket Paint Job.

Custom panel paint, candies, flake, and the like are often found on custom motorcycles, lowriders, and customs, and regardless of whether it is your favorite or not, and regardless of the color and style, everyone stares and appreciates what must have went into painting something like that. The truth about paint jobs like that is the time and effort that goes into them is mostly in the layout and masking of the thing. With so many layers and colors and graphics involved it can often take a hundred times longer to mask it than it takes to spray it. But there is a lot of skill that goes into spraying candies, pearls, and heavy flake. But how exactly does it really happen?

Well lucky for you, Time Warp Custom Paint is going to show us. This is a tutorial if you will and one that you can use to inspire you to get out and paint something yourself. Now I have to think that with a few spray cans and some time you could practice certain elements of this before you ever got into the good stuff, but regardless I think this could be something fun and it makes me want to try it out. I wonder if doing something like this on an old hood would be cool for the inside of the shop. Hmmmmm

Autopsy Of A Dyno Mule: Real St Performance Tears Down A Stock Block and Crank 1,850hp 2JZ To Check Its Guts

Engines tell us things when we take them apart after they’re used, right? We look to see how things are wearing, what stuff is wearing and shouldn’t and what we can do better the next time we put one together. In this case we join the crew at Real St Performance, one of the neatest and most accomplished shops in the country. These guys are wizards with a lot of stuff but the 2JZ engine platform is definitely their wheelhouse. The engine you are going to see being taken down was build to be used as a dyno mule to test a new piston design for the Toyota inline six. You’ll see what worked, what didn’t and what these guys learned from the component inspection.

What we dig most about this video is the honesty. It would have been easy to pull it down and say, “Yep, everything is awesome and we wouldn’t change a thing, we crushed it!” Well, they did crush it because the thing made 1,850hp with a stock block and crank but the parts in a few places were not the happiest. Not the stuff you may be expecting, either, and maybe not for the reasons you are expecting.

Engine forensics at their finest. Check out this gnarly 2JZs guts!
