2021 Goodguys Summit Racing Equipment Nationals Photo Coverage: More Cool Cars, Trucks, Bruisers, and Hot Rods From The Show!

(Photos by Wes Allison) – We’re back with more great images from the 2021 Goodguys Summit Racing Equipment Nationals presented by PPG. This was a monster of a show that totally bounced back from a 2020 cancellation for reasons that need no explanation. Goodguys has been a juggernaut in the car show industry for decades now and like everything else, people were wondering what 2021 would look like after most hot rodders had a “year off”. Well, the answer is that it looks pretty damned good. We’re talking about record car counts, spectator counts, and the complete spectrum of vehicles that you can image.

From the most modern cutting edge pro touring cars to the laid out International Harvester you see in the lead image, that’s what this massive gathering was all about. Horsepower, style, friends, family, and fun. Check out the photos!

Awesomely Weird: This 1970s Chevrolet Parts Film Stars Evel Knievel And Literally Makes No Sense

We’re guessing someone lost their job for this one. You are going to watch this 1970s Chevrolet parts film which stars Evel Knivel and makes literally no sense at all. The theme of the film is “conflict” and it is illustrated by a series of scenes where animals eat other animals, black and white movies are shown, and Evel Knievel jumps stuff on his motorcycle, sometimes crashing, sometimes not. Throw in a dose of 1970s Anchoman-level hilarity with a bikini-clad woman, and you have yourself one of the most singular odd things we have ever seen.

Make no mistake, Knievel would never turn down a gig, especially one with Chevrolet that likely was a great payday for reading some cue-cards. The company definitely did not hire him for his suave acting ability because this dude is straight up stiff while narrating the action. By action, we mean the bizarre things we are shown on screen.

Oddly, while Chevrolet parts are mentioned a handful of times there’s barely (if ever) a Chevrolet car shown as a prop in the film. This whole thing is some weirdo theater of the mind that was likely schemed up by an executive’s kid. “Hey Johnson, get my son a job in the media department and let him run wild!”

Obviously, Knievel was majorly famous at this point and his star only grew bigger. Note that he mentions that someday, “I’ll jump a mile….” we all know how that quest ended.

You have to see this one to believe it.

Autopsy Of A Dyno Mule: Real St Performance Tears Down A Stock Block and Crank 1,850hp 2JZ To Check Its Guts

Engines tell us things when we take them apart after they’re used, right? We look to see how things are wearing, what stuff is wearing and shouldn’t and what we can do better the next time we put one together. In this case we join the crew at Real St Performance, one of the neatest and most accomplished shops in the country. These guys are wizards with a lot of stuff but the 2JZ engine platform is definitely their wheelhouse. The engine you are going to see being taken down was build to be used as a dyno mule to test a new piston design for the Toyota inline six. You’ll see what worked, what didn’t and what these guys learned from the component inspection.

What we dig most about this video is the honesty. It would have been easy to pull it down and say, “Yep, everything is awesome and we wouldn’t change a thing, we crushed it!” Well, they did crush it because the thing made 1,850hp with a stock block and crank but the parts in a few places were not the happiest. Not the stuff you may be expecting, either, and maybe not for the reasons you are expecting.

Engine forensics at their finest. Check out this gnarly 2JZs guts!

Learn How To Shape Metal With An English Wheel – Metal Shaping For Beginners English Wheel Basics

I don’t know why, but we car guys always seem to want all the cool tools, even if we don’t know how to use them. An English Wheel, for example, is one of those tools that most hot rodders do NOT have in their garage, but that all the coolest shops seem to have. So whenever any of us see those cool shops, whether in person or on tv, all we want is all the stuff they have. And so English Wheels are something everyone wants even if they don’t work sheet metal or know how to use one. I’ve used one a couple of times, but mastering one puts you in special company.

You can’t become a master if you don’t start as a beginner, so check out this cool video that is a beginner’s guide to using an English Wheel. I’m going to get myself one when I get the new shop done just so I can learn out to use it and not be the guy that just has one in the corner looking cool. Although I do want to pinstripe mine, cause that’s cool and everything looks better with pinstripes.

Check out the video below, and let us know what you think.

You’ve had a good Christmas, Santa or whoever else was good to you. Now’s the time to do what you have been wanting to do t your hot rod since forever…add a TREMEC transmission. There has never been a better time to swap a stick into your car. Why? Th new TKX from TREMEC can handle 600 lb-ft of torque, 8,000 RPM and 7,500 RPM shifts. It is more compact than the TKO so it fits better in stuff like roadsters and other applications where room is tight.

McLeod is the spot where you can get your hands on one of these bad boys and sling it into your car. They can also get you hooked with the right clutch for your application along with other stuff you’ll need to help move the swap process along. Check them out right after you check out the story below.

TKX FTW!

TREMEC Releases New TKX 5-Speed RWD Transmission- Available through McLeod Racing

(ANAHEIM, CA) TREMEC releases their new compact 5-speed transmission called the TKX. The TKX is perfect for a restoration or an upgrade for a classic muscle car, 1930s-era roadster coupe or any application where space is an issue. The compact design means little if any tunnel modifications in most applications.

The TKX took a forward-looking approach to finding the best and most efficient solution for a 5-speed RWD manual transmission. The end result is superior shift-ability with smooth shifts at high RPMS through the use of multi-cone synchronizers and hybrid synchronizer rings. At the same time, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance is optimized with a gear layout to best control stress levels, while providing structural stiffness with a ribbed, 3-piece aluminum housing. Durability is further optimized with oversized gear widths, gaskets at all flanges, and caged needle bearings in all gear positions.

“We listened to our customers, combined their suggestions with our OEM technology and strengthened our aftermarket line up with the addition of the TKX,” says Mike Kidd, aftermarket business unit manager of TREMEC.

The TKX has 600 lb.-ft of torque capacity and is capable of engines speeds of 8,000 RPMS with shifts at 7,500 RPMS. The transmission is designed for multiple applications with three shifter locations. It is compact, end-loaded design provides clearance in most transmission tunnels without floor modifications.

“TREMEC listened to its customers and knew they needed a more compact version of their incredibly popular TKO ,” says McLeod President, Paul Lee. “The TKX by TREMEC allows McLeod to offer another option for customers looking to upgrade their current manual car or go from automatic to manual with less work .”

The TKX transmission is available to order through McLeod Racing. As the drivetrain market’s one-stop-shop, McLeod Racing has a complete line up of clutches, flywheels, crossmembers, and anything else to accompany the installation of the new TREMEC transmission. With the year that we’ve had, the time where we get together with family and friends and break bread (and bird…cannot forget the turkey now) seems more special than it has in a long time. While many of you will be frying, roasting, or smoking a big bird, and watching football, or catching up with family members that you may not have seen in what feels like forever, we can’t forget that this day is all about: giving thanks. Brian, Chad and myself are incredibly thankful everything that we have been able to do this year and, on behalf of ourselves and our families, want to wish our BangShift family a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving. Whether it’s something big that happened in your life this year, or the little things like the smiles from your family, it’s all worth being thankful for. So join us in being thankful this year, as we share the things we are thankful for in 2020.

This year was tough, make no mistake. But regardless of how strange the days got, we were still able to do the job that we love so much: to bring you closer to the hobby that we all love. Sometimes, we were the only connection that you may have had. We were privileged to have been there in person and were honored to be the ones to provide you with something, anything, that would ease the burden of the stresses of this year. We got creative when we needed to, we leaned on others when we needed help, and we were supported by our family and friends throughout our endeavors this year. Whether the tire smoke was filtered through a face mask or we had to wave at you from across the track, know that nothing has changed from years passed…we still live and breathe everything about this world and we will still do everything within our power to bring you that much closer to the action. Whether it is Brian’s multiple irons in the fire that he handles with the skill he uses on the microphone, or it’s Chad putting his all into an announcing gig while trying to sneak in track time on the side, or it’s me splitting the difference between living on a scaffold behind the camera or under a car with wrench in hand, every second we get to do this as our career is another day we get to do what we love as a career. We’re lucky, we know this, and we do not take that for granted.

The amount of thanks that we have is monumental. A big thank you goes out to you, the readers, the livestream viewers, the Forum regulars, the Facebook folk, every last one of you who stop by and check out what we do. Thank you to our amazing contributors who assist us in every way possible. Thank you to the racers, the industry leaders, the builders, the backyard hot-rodders, those bastions of history who have forgotten more than we have learned. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts.

A special thank you goes out to our sponsors, who have been the reason why we are able to do what we do: American Powertrain, ARP, Borgeson, Chris Alston’s Chassisworks, FTI, Holley, Mahle Motorsport, Mark Williams Enterprises, McLeod, Meziere, Optima, Original Parts Group, Powermaster, QA1, Race Winning Brands, RideTech and TrickFlow. It is because of their support and their belief in what we do that we are able to bring you this content. Please remember them as we move on towards the Christmas season…as they support us, we need you to support them.

(Thanks to Dylan McCool for capturing this!)

From our tables to yours, Happy Thanksgiving from BangShift.com.

Special thank to Jerry Fuchs (Fooksie) for the cool Hot Rod Turkey graphic.

Original Post

Yep, the sad news that Drag Week 2020 was cancelled happened a few days ago, and it makes us sad but is not surprising. With one of the tracks closing for the year weeks ago, and at least one other track wanting to get out of holding the event, there wasn’t much hope on our end that this thing was actually going to happen. But thinking it would be cancelled and it actually getting cancelled are two different things and so it sucks for everyone that counts on this event each and every year. In this video you’ll see Alex and Dennis Taylor talking about the event, the cancellation, and hinting at something else that is maybe possibly kinda in the works. Trust me, that isn’t a click bait routing any more than the video title is. There is something in the works to try and salvage the time off and everything else for Drag Week Racers. So don’t cancel the vacation plans yet. The route won’t be the same, but the time frame would be, so keep those dates open!

I wish we could give you all the details and info right now, but things are still in the works and still not confirmed. But know that there is a promoter out there working to make this a reality for everyone.

Until we have 100% confirmation we won’t say anything more. But rest assured that when it is 100% we will tell the world.

We all love old cars around here. The fact that they represent history, they represent evolution, and they represent the kind of mechanical progress that an industry was built on all play a part into our automotive fandom. They are also a blank canvas which can be made into the builder’s or owner’s vision is the other big deal here. Cars like the iconic 1949-1951 Ford have long served as the puddy in the hands of hot rodders. These famed “shoebox” Fords are about as cool as they come and when repowered with modern engines and transmissions, the fun goes through the roof. There is one part of the program that can always use attention in these older cars, the steering.

Converting your 1949-1951 Ford to power steering is absolutely no problem with this kit from our pals at Borgeson. The steering box, the mounting bracket, the hardware, and the arm are all included here. Pumps and hoses can also be had with more details to be found on the website linked below.

Why would you want to have a cool old Ford that has the steering ratio of a cruise liner? You don’t. Upgrade with this kit and you get a nice ratio power steering box that virtually installs itself. You are not going to be figuring out brackets or how to mount stuff, that work has already been done.

Borgeson has an incredible product line, make sure you visit the website and check out what they have to fit your application. From modern muscle cars and trucks to iconic classics, they have what you want.
