High-Performance Turbo Manual Transmission Fun

In April 2018 Ford announced all its sedans and coupes would be going away by 2020, except for one–the iconic Mustang. High-powered Mustang GT, Mach1 and Shelby GT500 versions are well-known, with the latter model pumping-out 760 pin-you-back-in-your-seat horsepower. Big horsepower gets the headlines and is as sexy as all get out, but what about getting into a Mustang that provides driving exhilaration while also not scaring the heck out of you? Look no further than the 2021 Mustang Coupe with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost.

Respectable Power and Performance

Plenty of power under that long hood

Clean Fleet Report spent a week in the rear-wheel drive 2021 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Premium Fastback, powered by a high-performance turbocharged 2.3-liter I4 mated to a six-speed manual transmission with launch control and five selectable drive modes. Producing a fun 330 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, the Mustang high-performance package and the six-speed manual is civil enough for around town driving. And yes, you can spin the tires!

The EPA has rated the EcoBoost 2.3L high-performance at 20 mpg city/27 highway/22 combined. In 240 miles driving around Southern California we averaged 23 mpg, but in a 100-mile run with the adaptive cruise control set at 65 mph, we averaged 31.2 mpg, exceeding the EPA figure. This fuel economy is encouraging, but it will take a wide open road with little traffic and lots of patience to equal it. If fuel economy is your primary focus and you can live without high performance, the standard turbocharged 2.3L puts out 310 horsepower and delivers 21/32/25 with its 10-speed automatic.

Being realistic, no one will be buying a high-performance Mustang for making bread and milk runs. This car begs to be driven with great elan, so real world driving will use more fuel. Fuel economy numbers reported by Clean Fleet Report are non-scientific and represent the reviewer’s driving experience using the dash gauge computer. Your numbers may differ. 

Shifting Fun

Clean Fleet Report took delivery of a 2021 Ford Mustang Coupe and knew the week ahead was about to be fun. There are not many manual transmission cars anymore, and getting one with rear-wheel drive and 330 horsepower was a treat. The electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering delivered confident road feel, aided by the Pirelli PZero Corsa4 ZR rated 265/40 summer tires on 19-inch, luster nickel-painted aluminum wheels. ZR is a speed rating, which in this case means the tire can handle speeds surpassing 150 mph.

Good grip from the rear

The grip was excellent, thanks in a big part to the independent rear suspension that delivered a controlled driving experience. The optional MagneRide damping system, part of the $1,995 Handling Package, kept the rear tires planted. MagneRide responds to road conditions 1,000 times per second for each damper or shock absorber. First introduced in 2002, versions of this suspension system are found on Camaro, Corvette, Cadillac, Acura, Audi, Land Rover, Ferrari, and Lamborghini models.

Stopping was by the four-wheel power disc brakes, which have a four channel anti-lock braking system with rear sway bars and electronic stability control.

The leather-trimmed gear shifter is perfectly positioned for arm angle and grip size, whether for slow or hard shifting. The clutch has a good feel and smooth engagement, but the shifts can be notchy at certain rpms and if not perfectly rev matched. This is not the smoothest manual we have driven, but it is still a blast going through the gears.

First gear is for getting off the line, but 2nd, 3rd and 4th are where things get interesting. When it is go-time, the turbocharged 2.3L came to life with a throaty note that would grumble and pop from the active valve performance exhaust system. This adaptive system, which amplifies the sound, has exhaust settings such as sport and track, making for a pleasant reminder you are driving a high-performance car. There is even a quiet setting when sneaking out at 5 a.m. to go to a car show. For even a racier sound, check-out what comes from the Mustang GT with the 5.0L V8 engine, which has 100 more horsepower.

Zero-to-60 mph times were right around 5.0 seconds, with linear acceleration and unnoticeable turbo lag. Pushback in the seat comes at 3,000 rpm, and stays consistent and stout through the 6,500-rpm red line. The optional 10-speed rev-matching automatic probably would pull even faster times (it also delivers slightly better fuel economy).

The command position–just as its always been

The 2021 Ford Mustang interior has a comfy, retro feel to it. Digital gauges are large and easy-to-read, with black backgrounds and white letters, and toggle switches are a throw-back to sports cars from the 1960s. Clean Fleet Report’s Mustang came with black leather-trimmed Recaro sport seats that were manually adjustable.

Accent stitching on the seats, console and heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel combine with carbon fiber on the dash for added custom detail. The Recaro seats were supportive and tight fitting, while the rear seats are best for those of a smaller stature. The trunk is surprisingly large, but when folding the split rear seat the Mustang is its most versatile, as the cargo area is exceptionally large. Two on a weekend trip will have no problem fitting all their gear.

The 12-speaker, including a trunk-mounted subwoofer, infotainment system includes navigation, Ford SYNC and SiriusXM/FM/CD/HDAM with MP3 playback capability. USB ports with iPod connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, music streaming via Bluetooth wireless technology, and hands-free phone capability complete the system. All this is viewed through a 12-inch, high-resolution LCD touch screen. The Ford PassConnect includes 4G LTE WiFi.

The Classic Mustang Look

A long hood with a short trunk lid sums-up the classic Pony Car design made famous in the 1960s by the Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger (and a few others who have disappeared from the scene). The 2021 Mustang coupe has the distinctive fastback design, and is done in a retro-modern style, harkening back to the 1965 Mustang. From the LED head and fog lights to the signature sequential turn-signal taillights, the 2021 Mustang is a good-looking car. The slight hood bulges have functional air intakes. For even more fun, our Mustang came in a very bright Grabber Yellow!

Convenience and Safety

The 2021 Ford Mustang has available convenience features such as illuminated sill plates and Mustang “pony” puddle lights, ambient interior lighting, autodim rear view mirror, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a tilt and telescoping steering column, hill start assist, power and heated exterior mirrors, power windows with one-touch up and down, keyless start and entry, passive entry system and a theft deterrent system.

Safety systems include dual front, seat-mounted side, driver knee, and full side curtain air bags. The Ford Co-Pilot360 is an advanced driver assist system (ADAS), which includes forward collision warning, lane keeping and driver alert warning, lane keep assist, blind spot with cross traffic alert, rear view camera, rear parking distance warning, pre-collision assist with emergency braking and pedestrian detection.

The 2021 Mustang has a 5-Star safety rating, the highest by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Insurance Institute for Highway safety, IIHS, has awarded the Mustang Good ratings for crash worthiness.

The performance from the turbocharged high-performance four-cylinder was more than adequate for a sporty drive, whether on mountain curves or cruising leisurely your favorite highway or road. The 2.3L High Performance offers 20 more horsepower than the base EcoBoost engine (Ford dropped the V6 as the base engine in 2021), while not making it necessary to go for the Mustang 5.0L V8 for extra performance.

When visiting your Ford dealer, tell the rep you want to drive the Mustang EcoBoost High Performance. Then, for comparison take a spin in the Mustang GT or Mach 1. This way you will know which of the iconic Mustangs could be right for you.

“We designed the Icarus with a philosophy of no compromises” said founder and CEO Pierre-Mathieu Roy. “We wanted a four-season unit that was light enough for easy driving both on and off-road, and it needed to be strong enough to carry all of our outdoor toys on the exterior rack system” continued Roy.

The reengineered and reinforced fiberglass shell adds the structural support requested by Roy and it boasts R16 insulation, making it suitable for use in all four seasons. A Webasto Heating Unit supplies hot air and water, and A/C is powered by a 12v air conditioner. A 2,000-watt inverter is up to the task of charging the onboard 300ah to 600ah Lithium battery bank, and rooftop solar panels can supply up to an additional 300w of energy. The Icarus also boasts an on-board water pump, a 15-gallon fresh water tank and 13-gallon grey water tank. The exterior is adorned with an up to 48,000 Lumen light bar on the front, and utility LED lights on the sides and rear as well as a retractable awning. Like the Falcon, the Icarus also has a modular exterior rack system that can be configured to carry a wide range of sporting goods. 

The interior has room for a full bed over the cab, hidden storage for a portable toilet, and a multi-function seating and table area that can be reconfigured to make room for an additional bed. The kitchenette features a stainless-steel sink and a mobile induction cooktop. Remaining interior space is dedicated to a mudroom with a mobile shower. That precious real estate can also be used to hang wet clothing or for additional seating.

Later this year it will be possible to add a Red Tail Overland structure on the roof of the Icarus, transforming it into a penthouse with a full 4 season bed.

The Icarus is available in two models: the Icarus 6 will fit trucks with 6.5-foot beds and the Icarus 8 is for larger trucks with 8-foot beds. Don’t look now, but the retro-styled pony cars from the Detroit Three have now been around long enough that it’s almost time to start getting nostalgic for the first examples of the breed. Ford kick-started this genre with the bold retro styling of the fifth-generation Mustang, which was unveiled way back in 2004 and went into production for the 2005 model year. Ford’s success with its new/old ‘Stang inspired Chevrolet and Dodge to relaunch their dormant pony cars along a similar throwback theme: A reborn Dodge Challenger (inspired by the original 1970 Challenger) debuted for 2008, and a revived Chevrolet Camaro (which put a new-age spin on 1969 Camaro cues) followed for 2010. The Challenger has been soldiering on with clever updates to that same basic platform ever since, while the Mustang and Camaro both received redesigns—for 2015 and 2016, respectively—that continued with heritage-inspired design.

All along the way, Ford has been keeping things fresh with several retro-themed special editions. Let’s take a look at two of the latest of these, and compare them head to head. The current iteration of the ferocious Shelby GT500 debuted as a 2020 model. As with the earlier versions of the modern GT 500, it represents the racetrack-ready, high-performance pinnacle of the Mustang lineup. The Mach 1 was re-launched for 2021 as an essential replacement for the outgoing Bullitt in the Mustang lineup—stronger, nimbler, and flashier than a GT, but not all the way up at Shelby GT500’s level. And with the recent departure of the Shelby GT350 model (it was discontinued after the 2020 model year), there is nothing in between these two muscle Mustangs.

Both vehicles are packed with Mustang heritage. The Mach 1 dusts off a well-loved Mustang nameplate that debuted for 1969, ran through 1978, and reappeared briefly for 2003-’04 on a nostalgia-themed model. The 2021 Mach 1 takes its visual inspiration from the original 1969 car, but with a notably modern spin. The Shelby GT500 pays homage to the original 1967 Shelby GT500 Mustang, though you’ll have to pay at least $2000 extra if you want the signature Shelby-style dorsal racing stripes and rocker-panel stripes.

There are no major changes to the GT500 for 2021; a couple new paint colors join the palette, and a $10,000 Carbon Fiber Handling Package, which adds 20-inch carbon-fiber wheels, adjustable strut-top mounts, and aerodynamic body add-ons, joins the options list. Even without the big-ticket carbon-fiber package, a healthy load of options pushed the bottom line of our Shelby GT500 test vehicle to a cool $81,190… a $19,255 premium over our Mach 1 tester.

For that money, you’ll get a track-ready super-performance machine, with the expected compromises in everyday comfort. The low-slung front bodywork is prone to scraping on steep driveways and the like. The turning radius feels wider than other Mustangs’, no doubt because of the meatier tires. Those Pilot Sports are plenty noisy on the highway too, with copious amounts of road roar and patter. The overall ride is stiff and “nervous,” but it’s never punishing… the standard MagneRide shocks are doing their job here. The Mach 1’s driving character isn’t as extreme, at least in the basic form of our test vehicle. It’s mostly on par with the departed Bullitt special-edition Mustang we’ve previously tested.

For well-heeled fans of good ol’ American V8 muscle, both of these cars are worth their substantial price premium over a garden-variety Mustang GT and its 460-hp 5.0-liter V8… and both will likely be collectors’ items in the future.

The $222 Mach 1 Appearance Package adds an exclusive Fighter Jet Gray paint color, Ebony/Orange interior, orange brake calipers, and unique hood and bodyside stripes. The Shelby GT500 offers a variety of body-stripe and other appearance options—the only one our test vehicle had was the $695 painted black roof, but the standard vented hood, rear spoiler and aggressively styled front and rear fasciae gave it a menacing look nonetheless.

The Mach 1 gets a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 that makes 480 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque—this same basic powerplant was used in the special-edition Bullitt Mustang of 2019-’20.The Shelby GT500 is powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 that puts out 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque. Both the Mach 1 and GT500 engines feel every bit as strong as their ratings suggest—to really use all of the GT500’s copious power, you’ll need a racetrack. A brawny V8 rumble is part of the deal with both cars too; the GT500’s exhaust note might wake your neighbors even when it is set to “Quiet” mode.

The GT500’s interior is a step above even an optioned-up Mach 1. Among its exclusive features are a steering-wheel rim wrapped in grippy Alcantera synthetic suede (with a centering stripe at the top of the rim—useful as an orientation aid in track driving). On both the GT500 and Mach 1, elements of the core Mustang’s relatively basic interior materials are apparent despite the trim upgrades.

The Mach 1 offers the choice of a 6-speed manual transmission (standard) or a 10-speed automatic (a $1595 option, which our test vehicle was equipped with) but the GT500’s only transmission is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic with a rotary-dial gear selector. The dial works well, but it doesn’t exactly scream “fire-breathing muscle car.” The consolation is that the 7-speed gearbox itself is wonderful—it delivers quick, responsive shifts in aggressive driving while remaining impressively smooth and refined in everyday cruising.

A pair of Recaro seats is a $1595 option for the Mach 1, but our test vehicle wasn’t so equipped. The GT500 can also be equipped with Recaro seats like our tester was—they’re a $1595 option as well, though they’re a different design than the Mach 1’s Recaros. The GT500’s Recaros offer excellent support in fast cornering. They’re quite snug—even for slender folks—but not uncomfortable. Both the Mach 1 and GT500 Recaros have pass-throughs in the seatbacks for aftermarket racing seat belts.

All Mach 1s come with 19-inch wheels. Our test vehicle wore these Magnetic (metallic gray)-painted aluminum wheels, a $450 option. Choosing the $3750 Handling Package nets wider wheels and tires, revised chassis tuning, larger rear spoiler, and a front “aero splitter” spoiler. The GT500 comes standard with 20-inch high-gloss-black flow-formed aluminum wheels on grippy Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires; carbon-fiber wheels on even grippier Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 tires are optional.

I’m not quite ready to accept the Nineties as the distant past, but maybe I need to. Consider that the first official White House website went live in 1994, and that Quentin Tarantino’s now-classic Pulp Fiction was released the same year. It’s getting hard to remember a world before internet connections and great Vincent Vega quotes. In auto-related news, trucks accounted for 40 percent of all light-duty-vehicle sales for the very first time.

And, speaking of light trucks, you might have expected SUVs to be among the least fuel efficient vehicles of 1994, and you’d be half right. Per Consumer Guide testing, as reported in Consumer Guide Auto Test 1994, there were four SUVs on the list of the thirstiest vehicles we evaluated that year. The remainder, save for the Chevrolet Camaro, were all luxury cars.

Presented here for your consideration and amusement are the 10 Worst Gas Guzzlers of 1994*, as tested by Consumer Guide. (The asterisk in the title indicates that this list is limited to vehicles actually tested by CG, thus explaining the absence of any Lamborghini or Unimog vehicles.) Hey, Ford, what’s shakin’?

The zinger comeback to that cheeky question would be Tremor, a new off-road equipment package for 2020 F-250 and F-350 Super Duty pickups. Other things that might rock the big-pickup buyer’s world are the introduction of an available 430-horsepower V8, a new 10-speed automatic transmission, and revised cosmetics inside and out.

The new-for-2020 Tremor Off-Road Package includes hardware such as a limited-slip front differential, locking rear differential, a 2-inch lift kit, upgraded shock absorbers, low-speed cruise control, and chassis-protecting skid plates.

All of this turned up in one tidy package that was dropped off on Consumer Guide’s doorstep wrapped in a Velocity Blue F-350 crew cab with 4-wheel drive and midlevel Lariat trim. Base price for an F-350 Lariat 4×4 crew cab is $55,665 with delivery, but Tremor gear, the new 7.3-liter gas V8, and 11 more options ran the bottom line on the test truck to $70,690.

The basic Ford Super Duty cabin is already nicely outfitted, and the $3495 Lariat Ultimate Package includes interior upgrades such as a navigation system, remote start, and heated/ventilated front seats.

The big pushrod V8 is a $1705 upcharge from the F-350’s standard 6.2-liter V8. It kicks out 430 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 475 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. In our tests it moved a truck that weighs close to 7000 pounds with authority, if not exactly cloisterlike silence. The 10-speed trans works smoothly and efficiently, with alert kickdown to aid merging and passing. However, there’s not much it can do about fuel economy. This driver recorded just 9.05 mpg after driving the truck for 61 miles, in city-type driving 46 percent of the time—always unladen, and always in 2-wheel drive. Change any of those factors and the quaking will be in your gas budget.

2020 Ford F-350 Tremor

Like most heavy-duty crew-cab pickups, the F-350 Super Duty’s rear-seat space is cavernous enough to fit three plus-sized adults in comfort.

What about hauling and towing? As a “short” crew cab (159.8-inch wheelbase, 6.75-foot-long cargo bed) 4×4 with the 7.3 engine, the test truck’s payload rating was 4460 pounds. Its conventional towing limit is 15,000 pounds, with a fifth-wheel/gooseneck-hitch rating of 16,200 or 20,000 pounds, depending on axle ratio. Note that for the most pulling power in an F-350 there’s the extra-cost Power Stroke 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8, newly beefed up to 475 horsepower and 1050 lb-ft.

Either of those optional powerplants is required in order to add the Tremor package to a Super Duty, and it’s available for the XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trim levels. The $3975 option group outfits the truck with 35-inch off-road tires (and matching full-size spare), 18-inch low-gloss black-painted wheels, springs that raise front ride height by two inches, an electronic-locking rear differential, limited-slip diff for the front axle, twin-tube performance shock absorbers, low-profile running boards, skid plates to protect the transfer case and fuel tank, modified front air dam for improved approach angle, water-fording vent tubes for the transfer case and axle, and traction-enhancing Rock Crawl and Trail Control modes. The package rounds out with body-color wheel-lip moldings and Tremor identification on the sides of the cargo bed.

The specialized underpinnings bring on a firm but not terribly brittle ride. There’s some highway noise from the big rubber with its off-road-attuned tread, but about the “worst” thing you’ll experience on paved roads is a steady low-key vibration felt through the steering wheel. The last time we drove an F-350 from this generation it was a long-bed crew cab with a “dually” rear axle, a truck that required great care and forethought for lane changes and other maneuvers. The more, ahem, compact dimensions of our 2020 Tremor made it a little nimbler to handle, but the big power trailering mirrors with parabolic lower portions are indispensable assistants for expressway driving, especially with the driver perched so far up in this high-riding rig.

That tall stance also has an impact on cabin and cargo-bed access. The running boards will be virtually indispensable to passengers for entry and exit. In back, the open tailgate rests 40 inches above flat ground, which complicates loading and makes it a real challenge for a person to climb into the bed. The Lariat Ultimate Package ($3495) that was added to the test truck included a retractable step and handgrip post built into the tailgate. They help, but even then, the step is still 26 inches from the ground.

The new-for-2020 7.3-liter V8, which puts out 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque, is a $1705 option. Eighteen-inch satin-black-painted aluminum wheels on 35-inch all-terrain tires are included in the $3975 Tremor Off-Road Package.

The other elements that make an F-350 Lariat crew cab what it is are pretty much what they have been since the current Super Duty models bowed for 2017. Legroom, shoulder room, and headroom are exceedingly generous, and large windows offer a commanding view of the surroundings. The cabin sports leather seats and steering-wheel wrap, and some woodgrain highlights. There’s a brushed-metal look to the air-vent bezels, steering-wheel arms, and console trim, but there’s a plasticky feel to them. Seats are long-drive comfortable, and the cushions in the 60/40-split rear bench flip up to clear room for a very large interior storage space. (A panel in the floor can be raised to pop open a long storage bin that can then be hidden under the seat cushions.)

The Tremor package also includes bedside callout graphics.

Front-row storage for personal items falls to dual glove boxes, an immense covered console box, and long door pockets. Rear passengers get pouches in the backs of the front seats and door pockets. There are cup holders in the front and back of the center console, and two more pop-out drink holders in the pull-down center armrest.

Standard equipment includes a power sliding rear window, power tailgate lock, tow hooks, trailer brake controller, trailer sway control, 10-way power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, satellite radio, Wi-Fi hotspot, remote keyless entry, and convenient Sync3 infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen. Electronic safety minders consist of blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-keeping warning, reverse sensing, and pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking. Some of the things included in the considerable options load were loading ramps that stow in the cargo bed, spray-in bed liner, navigation, and heated and ventilated front seats.

Every few years in the life cycle of a vehicle line the manufacturer has to shake things up a little. The Tremor is how Ford is doing it with the big F-350 pickup.

We don’t normally ask readers to work too hard when they’re checking out classic car ads, but we do have an observation to share: The sporty Fords of the late Eighties were available with a fascinating array of engines.

Consider that the Escort GT made do with a “high-output” 8-valve 4-cylinder engine, the Probe a turbocharged 16-valve four, the Mustang GT a burly old-school overhead-valve V8, and the Thunderbird SC a supercharged V6. Today a similar Ford lineup would likely be powered entirely by turbocharged 4-cylinder EcoBoost mills. Though, in fairness, the Mustang can still be had with a 5.0-liter V8. Interesting, too, that every sporty Dodge seen here is a Shelby variant of some sort.

There’s a lot of a lot in the 2020 Ford Expedition MAX Platinum. Being a MAX, it is the longer of the two configurations of Ford’s 3-row body-on-frame large SUV. Being a Platinum, it gets all the power and practically all the luxuries available as standard equipment.

Expedition MAX Platinum models come standard with a hands-free power liftgate, panoramic power sunroof, auto-folding heated mirrors approach lighting, and power deploying running boards.

One other thing that all Expeditions have is Consumer Guide’s imprimatur as a “Best Buy” in the class. Since its 2018 redesign, the Expedition has impressed us with its exceptionally spacious cabin, extensive feature availability, smooth and strong powertrain, and fine road manners for its size.

CG editors are no strangers to the MAX Platinum with 4-wheel drive, having driven one in each year of the Expedition’s current generation. It is so complete that none of what’s new for 2020 directly affects it. An added King Ranch trim level slips in just beneath the Platinum, a Black Accent appearance package is offered for the base XLT, and the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of safety features—which the Platinum already had—is now standard on all.

In the top-line Platinum trim, the Expedition’s cabin offers a high level of luxury for a mainstream-brand vehicle. Our testers liked the rotary-knob shifter, which functions well and opens up space on the center console.

This embarrassment of riches is reflected on the window sticker. Our test vehicle went from a starting price of $81,505 (with delivery) to $84,065 via a short list of options that included a trailer-towing package, second-row captain’s-chair seating, and Burgundy Velvet Metallic paint. Among Platinums, 4-wheel drive comes at a $3145 premium over rear-wheel-only motivation, and a Max costs $3025 more than a “standard-length” 4×4.

Our test vehicle was equipped with the extra-cost second-row bucket seats, which reduce overall capacity to seven but provide an open center pass-through to the third row. Second-row passengers get climate controls (including on/off buttons for the heated seats), audio controls, charging ports, and cupholders in the front center console.

With a wheelbase of 131.6 inches and total length of 221.9 inches, Maxes are 9.1 and 11.9 inches longer, respectively, than “standard-length” models. Inside, the real gain manifests itself in cargo room—there’s 16.9 cubic feet more of it in the long-body Expedition. Passenger volume, on the other hand, is essentially identical (based on Ford’s figures, the third row in the Max has 0.1-inch more headroom and 0.1-inch more shoulder room), and it certainly is generous. Legroom for front- and middle-row passengers ranges from really good to excellent, depending on where the adjustable seats are set up, and a couple of adults sitting in the third row get no worse than passable legroom even with the middle seats tracked as far back as they’ll go. One of our editors who has a couple of small children said they liked sitting in the third row: “It was like their own little clubhouse back there.”

The benefits of the Expedition MAX models’ extra length are clear in the cargo area. There’s a full 34.3 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the third-row seats, compared to 19.3 cubic feet in the regular-length Expedition. The MAX offers 73.3 cubic feet of volume behind the second row, and 121.5 cubic feet with both the second- and third rows folded.

With the captain’s chairs it’s almost as easy to get to the third row by walking between the seats as it is to use the tilt-and-slide feature that makes it possible to pass behind them. (With the standard second-row bench seat, passenger capacity tops out at eight.) The backs of the captain’s chairs fold utterly flat and in line with the cargo floor, but with considerable gaps around them, which may complicate loading. The 60/40-split third-row seat backs retract via power switches in the cargo bay’s left sidewall. Second-row seats can also be dropped remotely. There’s hidden storage in trays beneath the floor of the ample cargo hold that’s accessible through a hands-free power liftgate.

The twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 in the Platinum develops 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, which is 25 more horsepower and 10 additional pound-feet than the same engine makes in other Expeditions. It moves the truck with surprising eagerness, particularly in “Sport” driving mode, and enjoys the assistance of an utterly unobtrusive 10-speed automatic transmission that kicks down in a trice for passing bursts, then quickly and smoothly returns to the higher gears. You’ll want it to get back up there, too, because that’s where the gas savings are, such as they may be. The 141 miles that CGers put on the 2020 tester worked out to 16.8 mpg, which was 1.5 to 2.4 mpg better than they got from 2018 and ’19 Expeditions, but the latest run was the only one with a majority of highway miles. The EPA rates this powerteam at 16 mpg in city use, 21 mpg on the highway, and 18 combined.

Test Drive: 2020 Infiniti QX80 Limited

The Expedition’s twin-turbo EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6 makes 400 horsepower in Platinum models–a boost of 25 hp over the rest of the Expedition lineup. It provides satisfyingly brisk acceleration, especially for a vehicle this large.  Our test vehicle was equipped with 22-inch machined-aluminum wheels with painted pockets.

An object as big as an Expedition Max will demand some care in parking and close-quarters maneuvering, but there’s nothing daunting to the nicely tuned and weighted steering. Even rolling on 22-inch alloy wheels, as the Platinum does, ride is comfortable. Throw in generous personal-item storage, plentiful luxury appointments and conveniences, and a cooperative infotainment system, and it’s clear that there’s a lot to it.

When Gary Spracklin answered the classified ad in a hobby publication, he thought he was buying a whistle-clean daily driver. What he wound up with was an unlikely “trailer queen,” a 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 four-door sedan that gets the royal treatment because he decided he wants to keep the odometer reading below 1000.

That’s right: Spracklin’s 47-year-old Wimbledon White-over-Rangoon Red Galaxie has just 920 miles on it and he’d like to keep it that way. With a few minor exceptions, it’s an homage to originality and preservation.

Faced with a loss of storage space, the Galaxie’s previous owners in New York State put the car up for sale in 1997. A fan and collector of full-sized ’64 Fords (a convertible was his first car at age 16), Spracklin thought the demure four-door sedan would make ideal transportation for someone with his interests. But once he got the Galaxie home to Omaha, Nebraska, he realized that his anticipated “driver” was really a virtual time capsule of how Fords were made in 1964.

At the time Spracklin purchased the car, it had a mere 905 miles on the odometer. Only the original battery and fanbelt had been replaced by earlier owners. Almost immediately he opted to maintain the car as a showpiece of originality. The 15 miles the Galaxie has accumulated since Spracklin obtained it were mostly added in increments necessary to move it around his shop or show fields. In his care, only the engine pulleys and a leaking heater core have been replaced—and Spracklin still has the original pulleys. Though they’re showing signs of age, the bias-ply tires are the same ones that have been on the car since it left the factory.

1964 Galaxie

Full-sized 1964 Fords were at the end of a four-year styling cycle. However, that didn’t prevent two- and four-door sedans from receiving a new roof design that had a bit more of a forward slope than the Thunderbird-inspired unit of recent years.

Wheelbase stayed pat at 119 inches. Leaf springs supported the rear of big Fords for the last time.

With five body styles, the Galaxie 500 series offered the broadest availability of models and was the volume leader among “standard” Fords. The Galaxie 500 Town Sedan—company nomenclature for a four-door sedan—accounted for 198,805 orders, making it second only to the Galaxie 500 two-door hardtop for the affections of Ford customers that year.

Gary Spracklin’s age-defying car comes pretty close to depicting a Galaxie 500 four-door sedan in its $2667 base state. Blackwall tires, hubcaps, and a three-speed column-shift manual transmission were all standard-equipment items.

The handful of extra-cost options found on Spracklin’s Galaxie starts with its 289-cid V-8 engine. With a two-barrel carburetor and 9.0:1 compression, it develops 195 horsepower at 4400 rpm. As a replacement for the standard 223-cube inline six, it added $109 to the sticker price and was just the first of several available V8s that ran all the way to a 425-horse 427-cube job. Other add-ons to the featured car include its two-tone paint, AM radio, and seat belts.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of iconic movie “Bullitt” and its fan-favorite San Francisco car chase, Ford introduced the cool and powerful 2019 Mustang Bullitt.

Arguably the most famous Mustang of all is the dark-green 1968 Mustang GT fastback that Steve McQueen’s character Lieutenant Frank Bullitt drove in the 1968 motion picture Bullitt. Ford celebrated that iconic car with special-edition Bullitt Mustangs in 2001 and again in 2008-09. For 2019, Ford has released a third Bullitt Mustang, and like the others, it’s our choice for a future collectible.

The 2019 Bullitt is based on the Mustang GT Premium with Performance Package. Like the movie car, the exterior is lightly modified for a cleaner, more purposeful appearance. Up front there are unique upper and lower grille inserts, and the upper grille’s usual “pony” emblem is deleted. Subtle chrome accents around the grille and side windows further the retro vibe. Out back, the GT’s decklid spoiler has been left off and a simulated gas cap with a Bullitt logo rests on the panel between the taillamps. There are also quad exhaust tips finished in “NitroPlate Black.”

Exterior colors are limited to Dark Highland Green—like the original movie car—and Shadow Black. Bullitts roll on 19-inch “Heritage” alloy wheels with dark-finish five-spoke centers, and inside the rims the beefy Brembo-brand brake calipers are painted red. Mustang Chief Designer Darrell Behmer described the latest Bullitt this way: “As a designer, it’s my favorite Mustang—devoid of stripes, spoilers, and badges. It doesn’t need to scream about anything—it’s just cool.”

Under the hood, Mustang’s 5.0-liter V-8 received the Shelby GT350’s intake manifold, an Open Air Induction System, and a Bullitt-exclusive tune. The result is 480 hp and 420 pound-feet of torque. A “regular” Mustang GT has 20 less horsepower but the same torque rating. 

Bullitt Mustangs are exclusively available with a six-speed manual transmission, and Ford says the car’s active exhaust system has been retuned to give the Bullitt its signature exhaust burble. A strut-tower brace runs above the 5.0, and it wears an additional Bullitt logo. Top speed is a claimed 163 mph, eight more than a stock Mustang GT.

Moving inside, the office is black with Dark Highland Green accent-stitch detailing. The Bullitt logo appears on the steering wheel, dashboard, and door-sill plates, while the shifter is topped with an old-school white “cue ball” knob. The standard 12-inch digital instrument cluster features Bullitt-specific welcome graphics. Recaro sport seats with additional Dark Highland Green stitching are optional for $1595.

There are only two other options. A $2100 Bullitt Electronics Package adds a blind-spot monitoring system with cross-traffic alert; upgraded 12-speaker stereo with trunk-mounted subwoofer; memory functions for driver’s seat, side mirrors, and ambient lighting system; and touchscreen navigation. Also, MagneRide semi-active suspension is available for an extra $1695.

Base price of the Bullitt is $46,595. For comparison, a 2019 Mustang GT Premium with Performance Package starts at $42,945.

Final Drive:

The 2019 Bullitt deftly applies the “less is more” design motif of the original 1968 movie car to the latest Mustang GT. The Dark Highland Green paint, five-spoke wheels, and subtle chrome accents work together surprisingly well, making this Bullitt a definite head turner and quite desirable.

2021 F-150 Adds Hybrid, Confirms Full Electric Version

It’s only been five years since the last major redesign of the Ford F-150, not a long time historically in the truck world, but with competition heating up both in the traditional competitors and newcomers, Ford is pushing forward with the introduction of the all-new 2021 F-150, a remake of its best-selling and most lucrative model.

A new look for the F-150 (1 of 11)

The goal of the introduction this week, hosted by Ford spokesperson Dennis Leary and featuring a variety of Ford employees and F-150 customers, was to show that Ford is well-aware that its industry-leading position (best-selling truck for the past 43 years) is not something assumed, but an achievement to be re-earned every year. The 2021 Ford F-150 has a very simple goal—maintain and expand that market lead for another year or two.

Highlights of the introduction (some detail below) included the presentation of a new full hybrid model and confirmation that a full-electric version is coming. The other big takeaway is that electrification in a pickup take a significantly different form that in a sedan. In a truck application, the emphasis of a large battery is less on propulsion and zero emission miles than on providing a mobile power source for tools and toys.

Next year’s F-150, which will go on sale this fall, follows the typical pickup mold of offering a dizzying number of options in an attempt to provide a potential pickup for every possible buyer. The completely redesigned truck (every one of the aluminum exterior panel is new) will offer six engines, 13 different wheels and 11 grille options in a half-dozen trim levels.

Aerodynamics & tough pickups don’t always go together

Although no official fuel economy numbers are available, Ford pointed out that it was the most aerodynamic pickup the company has ever designed, employing grille shutters, a new automatically deploying air dam and new cab and tailgate geometry to reduce drag and reduce fuel consumption on all models.

The new hybrid F-150 will use an all-new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, augmented by a 35-kW/47-horsepower electric motor. A 10-speed transmission and 1.5 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery (mounted between the frame rails so it doesn’t take up any passenger or cargo space) complete the powertrain.

The all-electric F-150 will come in 2022, according to Ford COO Jim Farley. When it arrives, it will likely face several competitors, including the Rivian R1T, GMC Hummer, Tesla Cybertruck, Lordstown Endeavor and Nikola Badger.    

Electrification on the Job

Back to the present, Ford sees electric power as another tool for the job. The 2021 F-150 will come up with up to 7.2 kilowatts (kW) of exportable power, enough to run a generator and a variety of power tools through 120-volt and/or 240-volt outlets.

Plugs for all your jobs

Inside Ford has added a variety of high-tech features that point out how mainstream the modern pickup has become. One clever addition is that, with a few quick shifts of hardware, the center console can become a desk big enough to hold a laptop. Above that center console half of the F-150 lineup will have 12.0-inch touchscreen displays, matching what’s becoming the standard for the segment. The display will come equipped with Sync4, the latest version of Ford’s infotainment system. Ten new advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are going to be available.

Recognizing the variety of uses a truck might undergo, Ford has designed the front seats to recline 180 degrees, so not only is the pickup and office, but also a bedroom. Under the backseat is a lockable storage unit for stashing away valuables or expensive tools.

The Most List

What a pickup needs is a most list and Ford has drawn up a long one. The stated goal of the 2021 F-150 is to be able to tow the biggest load in its class, carry the heaviest payload, have the most horsepower and torque and also have the longest range.

More tech than seen in a pickup before

Don’t expect the competition to take this lying down, but Ford also had other news last week that went well beyond the news about the redesign of its best-selling product. The company laid out a goal of becoming of becoming carbon neutral by 2050 with three areas of focus that account for  95 peercent of the companies CO2 emissions:

  • Vehicle use
  • Supply base
  • Facilities

On the vehicle side, it’s putting $11.5 billion through 2022 into the Mustang Mach-E, Transit Commercial and fully electric F-150. It expects all of its manufacturing plants to use 100 percent locally sourced renewable energy by 2035.
