Wuling Hongguang Mini EV

Wuling Hongguang Mini EV

From January through July of this year, General Motors’ Chevrolet division sold almost 22,000 Bolt EVs. That’s a solid performance, good enough to rank third among all EV models sold in the U.S. during the same period. But impressive as the Bolt’s sales may or may not be, know this: The Bolt isn’t even close to being GM’s best-selling EV. Read on…

SAIC-GM Logo

SAIC-GM Logo

General Motors has enjoyed considerable success selling vehicles in China, both through brand channels we’ve heard of (Buick, Cadillac) and via joint ventures (or JVs) that are less well known to Americans. One such venture is the impressive-sounding SAIC General Motors Corporation Limited (SAIC-GM; SAIC was formerly known as Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation). The largest automotive JV in China, SAIC-GM is involved in another JV/ownership arrangement with Chinese micro-vehicle maker Wuling. Famous for its tiny commercial trucks, Wuling sold an impressive 1.8 million vehicles in China in 2020. It was in 2020 that Wuling began producing an unassuming little electric car called the Hongguang Mini EV.

The consumer-oriented Hongguang (Hongguang—pronounced “hong gwong”—is a variation of a popular Chinese unisex first name) is most notable for its price, starting at around $4200. For that money, you get a predictably tiny car— at 115 inches in overall length, the Hongguang stretches only 9 inches longer than the last version of the Smart ForTwo sold in the United States.

Unlike the ForTwo, which, as its name implies, seated only two occupants, the Hongguang provides seating for four—though two of those four will have to be smaller than average in size.

Wuling Hongguang Mini EV

The base version of the Hongguang is delivered with a 9.2 kWh battery and 13 kWh electric motor which drives the rear wheels through a single-speed transmission. So equipped, Wuling says its Mini EV will travel 75 miles on a single charge and reach a top speed of 62 mph. A note about that range: Chinese automakers quote New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) range estimates, which are generally optimistic relative to America’s EPA range estimates. The quoted 75 miles is probably more like 60 miles of real-world range.

For roughly $5600, Chinese consumers can step up to a higher-line model with a 13.8. kWh battery, which raises the promised range to 110 miles (likely more like 85 miles).

Wuling Hongguang Mini EV Cabrio

Both models come standard with an audio system, power windows, and air conditioning. Safety features include a driver-side air bag and antilock brakes.

Otherwise, the Hongguang is rather conventional for a Chinese-market mini car, save for one thing: It’s insanely popular with young shoppers. Wuling sold almost 30,000 examples of the Hongguang in January 2021, and more than 120,000 examples since the vehicle’s introduction. By most counts, the Hongguang is now the best-selling electric car in China—and the world—at the moment, pushing past the hot-selling Tesla Model 3 compact sedan.

To capitalize on the car’s youth appeal—more than 80 percent of buyers are under the age of 30—Wuling is rolling out two new variants. One is the high-style Macaron, which will feature unique color and trim options, and the convertible Cabrio, which was revealed at the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show.

Looking to take some Hongguang magic to other markets, Lithuanian armored-car manufacturer Dartz Motors is planning to export the car to Western Europe, beginning with Spain in 2022. Unfortunately, the upgrades necessary to make the Hongguang European Union compliant have driven the estimated cost of the car to €10,000 (roughly $12,000).

Our guess is that the spunky $4000 car that has Chinese youngsters scraping their Yuan together will fail to excite more-stoic Europeans at almost three times the price. As for the Bolt EV, a round of battery-fire-related recalls will blunt the impact of the revamped 2022 model, which was just beginning to arrive in showrooms earlier this summer. Regardless, it was unlikely that even an updated Bolt EV would ever come close to being GM’s best-selling EV.

Forgotten Concepts, Forgotten Concepts

This is an installment in a series of posts looking back on show cars that we feel deserved a little more attention than they got. If you have a suggestion for a Forgotten Concept topic, please shoot us a line or leave a comment below.

Chevrolet Nomad

First Shown: 2004 Detroit Auto Show

Description: Small sporty 2-door wagon

Sales Pitch: “A personal vehicle that carries the expressions and emotions of the driver.”

Chevrolet Nomad Concept

Chevrolet Nomad Concept

Details:

First shown at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show, the Chevrolet Nomad Concept was a compact 2-door wagon designed to be both sporty and practical. An homage to the Chevrolet Corvette Nomad show car that debuted at the 1954 GM Motorama, the 2004 Nomad was designed around General Motors’ Kappa small sporty-car architecture, which would soon underpin the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky two-seat sports cars. (The Solstice debuted as a 2006 model, and the Sky followed for 2007.)

The Nomad Concept was powered by a turbocharged Ecotec 2.2-liter 4-cylinder that put out 250 horsepower and was paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

To accommodate cargo loading, the rear glass retracted into the bottom-hinged tailgate. A roof panel over the cargo area could be removed to create space for larger items. Unlike the Solstice and Sky, the Nomad Concept was outfitted with a folding rear seat for ostensible 2+2 occupant capacity, but those back seats must have been extremely cozy.

CG Says:

The problem with concept cars as cool as the 2004 Nomad is that the potential audience is typically limited to auto journalists and diehard enthusiasts. And, auto journalists often tend to buy only used cars.

A shame, as seeing one of these sleek, sporty 2-door wagons on the road would have brought me great pleasure. As there are currently no small wagons available for sale in the U.S., it seems GM made the fiscally prudent decision not to proceed with Nomad as a production vehicle. Still, a new-age retro Nomad would likely have been pretty cool.

Quick Hits

The great: Cavernous room for both people and cargo; pleasant road manners for such a large vehicle

The good: Long list of standard and available features; satisfying acceleration

The not so good: Extra-large dimensions can make close-quarters maneuvering a challenge

John Biel

If you need a large, V8-powered, body-on-frame sport-utility vehicle, there are lots of choices. If you want it to be in the subluxury price class, the field shrinks. If you want one that Consumer Guide says is a “Best Buy” then the decision has practically been made for you.

The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe will probably do.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71

The Z71 is the most off-road-oriented model in the Tahoe lineup. It comes standard with a two-speed transfer case (with low-range gearing), a front skid plate, red tow hooks, and hill–descent control.

Longer and better riding for ’21, the Tahoe moves to the head of the class—along with its bigger-still Suburban sibling and the related GMC Yukon/Yukon XL. It has new looks, new features, and more passenger room, and it comes in an expanded model lineup with starting prices that range from $50,295 to $73,895, delivery included. For this test, CG drove one from near the middle of stack, a Z71 that jumped from $60,495 to $68,940 with options.

The Z71 is an off-road-oriented, 4-wheel-drive-only job that comes with a 355-horsepower 5.3-liter V8. (A 420-horse 6.2-liter V8 is reserved for the line-leading High Country model, and a 3.0-liter turbodiesel straight six is optional for all but the Z71.) It surpasses lesser Tahoe 4x4s by virtue of its standard “Autotrac” automatic 2-speed transfer case with shift-on-the-fly capability and hill-descent control, and stands apart from all other models thanks to a nipped and tucked front fascia that increases obstacle approach angle, a front skid plate, red front recovery hooks, a heavy-duty engine air filter, all-terrain tires on distinct 20-inch alloy wheels, and black tubular assist steps.

Test Drive: 2021 Chevrolet Suburban High Country

Chevrolet Tahoe Z71

Though the basic Tahoe cabin doesn’t look or feel particularly upscale, the controls are nicely laid out and easy to use–even the unconventional push/pull-button shifter located to the left of the infotainment touchscreen. To the right of the screen is a small covered storage bin. We like the infotainment system’s clear graphics and quick response times.

Foremost among the options packed on to the tester was a $5735 Z71 Off-Road Package with a few luxuries, trailering and safety assists, enhanced cooling, and Magnetic Ride Control and adaptive air suspension.

The closest this driver got to off-roading was busting out of a “berm” that a snowplow left at the end of his driveway—which the Z71 easily dispatched. Snowy neighborhood streets were no match for it, either. Like other ’21 Suburbans and Yukons we’ve driven, the ride quality was impressive from the combination of new multilink independent-rear suspension, Magnetic Ride Control’s constantly changing damping calibrations, and the air suspension’s positive influence on body control. Jolts and wallowing were kept well in check.

Quick Spin: 2020 BMW X7 M50i

Chevrolet Tahoe Z71

There’s ample room in the Tahoe’s first and second rows. Our test vehicle was equipped with the $2490 Rear Media and Nav Package, which includes dual color LCD high-definition touchscreens mounted on the front seat backs.

This test was our first of one of the new General Motors big SUVs with the 5.3 V8. It performs well in the Tahoe with fluid power delivery. If equipped with the Max Trailering Package, the Z71 can tow up to 8200 pounds. With a 10-speed automatic transmission and “Dynamic Fuel Management” that permits the engine to run on two, four, six, or eight cylinders depending on power need, it is quite a bit easier on gas than the 6.2s previously tested. This reviewer saw 18.5 mpg from a stint of 66 miles that was 40 percent city-type driving—almost 4 mpg better than what he got from a Yukon with the bigger engine. EPA estimates for the Tahoe Z71 are 16 mpg in city driving, 20 mpg on the highway, and 18 combined.

With the redesign, Tahoe gains 4.9 inches of wheelbase and grows 6.7 inches overall for ’21. That translates into three additional inches of legroom for second-row seats and up to 10 inches more legroom in the third row. (Second-row seats can slide fore and aft up to 5.5 inches.) Headroom is excellent in the first two rows and even most adult third-row occupants won’t feel hemmed in from above. Cargo space is abundant. The new configuration pumps 10.2 more cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the third row, and 28.2 additional cubic feet of load volume overall. The added length of the vehicle is only partly responsible for that. With the new rear suspension design, Chevrolet says the load floor is both flatter and lower when the seats are lowered.

Test Drive: 2021 GMC Yukon Denali

Chevrolet Tahoe Z71

Cavernous cargo space is a selling point of large SUVs. The Tahoe boasts 25.5 cubic feet of volume behind the third-row seats, 72.6 cu. ft. with the third-row seat backs folded, and 122.9 cu. ft. with both the second and third rows folded.

Between standard equipment—things like heated leather front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging, 9-speaker Bose audio system, and hands-free liftgate—and the option packages and individual extras, the Tahoe Z71 need not lack for much. However, in some ways, it’s not particularly plush. Considerable areas of hard plastic are obvious and even some soft-surfaced portions are thinly padded—if padded at all. For storage of incidentals, there is a big glove box, an ample covered console box, pockets in the sides of the console and in each door, and pouches behind the front seats. A power-sliding console box that tracks back to expose a large tray and hidden drawer is a $350 option. There are exposed cup holders in the console, middle-row pull-down center armrest, and sidewalls flanking the third-row seats.

First Spin: 2021 Cadillac Escalade

Chevrolet Tahoe Z71

Chevrolet’s 355-hp 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 is the lone powerplant available in the Z71, but it supplies satisfying power. Z71s come standard with 20-inch machined aluminum wheels mounted on all-terrain tires.

There’s a full complement of actual and virtual gauges to keep drivers informed, though the virtual ones occupy a somewhat-crowded row above the speedometer and tachometer dials. The Rear Media and Nav Package provided—among other things—a 10.2-inch touchscreen for the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system that also works with external tuning buttons for quick, intuitive audio inputs. Front climate controls have handy, direct dials with some function buttons.

Not everybody needs the kind of size and power embodied in stout body-on-frame sport-utilities. If you happen to be one of them, however, the ’21 Chevy Tahoe most certainly will do.

First Spin: 2021 GMC Yukon

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71

The Tahoe’s road manners, cargo space, and all-around refinement get a lot better with its redesign for 2021, and the Z71 model offers notably enhanced off-road capabilities.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV (left) and EV

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV (left) and Bolt EV

Today Chevrolet unveiled its redesigned-for-2022 Bolt EV electric vehicle, and also took the wraps off the Bolt EV’s all-new, SUV-like sibling: the 2022 Bolt EUV.

More electric-vehicle news and reviews

The Bolt EUV shares its powertrain and basic architecture with the Bolt EV, but it’s about 6 inches longer overall, which gives it 3 inches more legroom than the EV in the back seat. However, the EUV’s cargo room is not improved over the EV. It’s actually a shade less, measuring at 16.3 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 56.9 cu. ft. with the rear seat backs folded, compared to the EV’s respective measurements of 16.6 and 57.0 cubic feet.

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV

The Bolts’ all-electric powertrain is a single-motor drive unit that makes 200 horsepower. It has a 65 kWh lithium-ion battery that enables a Chevrolet-estimated driving range of 259 miles for the Bolt EV, and 250 miles for the slightly larger, heavier Bolt EUV.

The front-end design of both vehicles is highlighted by “high-eye” daytime running lamps (which also function as sequential turn signals) perched above the headlamps. Interior features include an 8-inch configurable digital gauge cluster, 10.2-inch infotainment touchscreen, and space-saving push-pull gear-selector buttons in place of a traditional shifter. A driver-selectable one-pedal driving mode increases regenerative braking to the degree that the driver can speed up, slow down, and come to a complete stop using only the accelerator pedal. Also included is a Regen on Demand feature, which enables the driver to initiate regenerative braking by pulling on a steering-wheel-mounted paddle.

First Look: 2022 Nissan Ariya

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV

Heated/ventilated front seats and heated outboard seats are available on both Bolts, as are a 360-degree surround-view monitor, rearview-mirror camera display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and wireless charging.

The Bolt EUV is available with GM’s Super Cruise semi-autonomous hands-free driver-assistance system. It’s the first Chevrolet to offer the feature, which is currently offered only on select Cadillac models. The EUV gets the base version of Super Cruise—not the enhanced version offered at Cadillac, which includes hands-free lane-change capability.

DC fast-charging capability, which enables the Bolt EV to add up to 100 miles of driving range in 30 minutes of charging (up to 95 miles for the Bolt EUV), is standard. The myChevrolet smartphone app has an Energy feature that enables users to locate charging stations across the country to plan for a road trip. A Dual Level Charge Cord, which has a changeable plug that allows charging on a standard 120-volt three-prong outlet or a 240-volt outlet, is standard on the EUV and available on the EV. And, in partnership with EV home-charging company Qmerit, Chevrolet will cover the installation of Level-2 charging capability in the homes of eligible buyers/leasers of a Bolt EV or EUV.

Meet the New GM Logo

2022 Bolt EV

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV

Both Bolts are slated to go on sale in all 50 states this summer. The Bolt EV starts at $31,995, and the Bolt EUV starts at $33,995 (both prices include destination). The Bolt EV’s sub-$32K base MSRP represents a price reduction of more than $5000 over the 2021 model. A limited-production Launch Edition version of the Bolt EUV, which includes Super Cruise, a panoramic sunroof, unique wheels, an illuminated charge port, and special badging, will start at $43,495. Even though the federal tax credit of $7500 is no longer offered on General Motors vehicles, there may be other state and local incentives that could lower the actual transaction price a bit more.

Hummer Is Back, And This Time It’s Electric

CG Says:

The redesigned Chevrolet Bolt EV and new Bolt EUV represent a further commitment to an all-EV future from General Motors, but neither vehicle feels like a full step forward at this point. The electric powertrain is essentially carryover technology, and the Bolt EUV isn’t radically different from its Bolt EV sibling. The EUV’s additional passenger room and added features are welcome enhancements that may nab customers who wouldn’t have considered a Bolt EV, but all-wheel drive is not on the menu, and even Chevrolet calls the EUV “SUV-like”—not an SUV—in its official press materials.

However, the pricing of both 2022 Bolts is very aggressive—even without a federal tax credit—and the other new features and enhancements should help these vehicles attract more first-time EV buyers and bridge the gap to when GM’s forthcoming, next-generation Ultium battery technology hits the market.

1994 Cadillac Deville, Gas Guzzlers of 1994, 10 Worst Gas Guzzlers of 1994

1994 Cadillac Deville

I’m not quite ready to accept the Nineties as the distant past, but maybe I need to. Consider that the first official White House website went live in 1994, and that Quentin Tarantino’s now-classic Pulp Fiction was released the same year. It’s getting hard to remember a world before internet connections and great Vincent Vega quotes. In auto-related news, trucks accounted for 40 percent of all light-duty-vehicle sales for the very first time.

And, speaking of light trucks, you might have expected SUVs to be among the least fuel efficient vehicles of 1994, and you’d be half right. Per Consumer Guide testing, as reported in Consumer Guide Auto Test 1994, there were four SUVs on the list of the thirstiest vehicles we evaluated that year. The remainder, save for the Chevrolet Camaro, were all luxury cars.

Presented here for your consideration and amusement are the 10 Worst Gas Guzzlers of 1994*, as tested by Consumer Guide. (The asterisk in the title indicates that this list is limited to vehicles actually tested by CG, thus explaining the absence of any Lamborghini or Unimog vehicles.) Even a mile away, anyone can make out the iconic profile of a 1969 Camaro RS. The Rally-Sport package was optional on the first Camaros, hiding the headlights for a menacing look. The 1967 and ’68 models were more modest, but nothing beats the style of 1969. For one year only, Chevrolet allowed stylists to accentuate every body line along with the interior. Unfortunately, the 1969 Camaro was one year only, as 1970 would see an all-new model.

Lately everyone has been in a frenzy to swap in the late-model LS engines. While they are less temperamental, they are physically smaller than the original small blocks. That’s why this forged 496 big block with make you smile. Inside are Mahle 10.5:1 pistons, h-beam rods, and a SCAT crank. The solid roller cam has .660 lift, and aluminum heads send exhaust to ceramic-coated Hooker headers. Behind them is a complete dual 3″ Flowmaster 50 series exhaust.

Thankfully the owner chose Vintage Air to keep the interior ice cold, as the black leather buckets will be warm in the summer. Other finishing touches include a Flaming River steering column, Omega gauges, and big Wilwood brakes. Nothing beats the sound and fury of a solid roller top end, especially when provoked. So not only does this Tangelo beast look amazing, it will rev fast enough to snap the tachometer needle.
